Responsible Gaming
Gambling is entertainment with a price attached, never a way to make money. This page explains how to stay in control, how to get help quickly, and how to shut off access entirely if you need to.
Help available right now
The National Gambling Helpline is free, confidential and open 24 hours a day, every day, on 0808 8020 133. You do not need to be in crisis to call, and you can call about someone else's gambling as well as your own.
BeGambleAware offers live chat, a free self-assessment and a directory of local treatment services. Gamblers Anonymous runs free peer-support meetings across the UK, in person and online. All three are linked from the footer of every page.
The four rules worth keeping
- Set a deposit limit before your first deposit, not after your first loss.
- Only ever stake money you would be content to lose completely.
- Never chase a loss. The next wager does not know about the last one.
- Keep a fixed time budget as well as a money budget, and use session reminders to enforce it.
Warning signs
If more than one of these is familiar, take the free confidential self-assessment on BeGambleAware today. Recognising it early makes it far easier to deal with.
- Gambling with money meant for rent, bills, food or debts.
- Borrowing money, selling possessions or using credit to fund it.
- Chasing losses in the hope of breaking even.
- Hiding how much time or money is going into it.
- Feeling restless, irritable or anxious when you cannot gamble.
- Missing work, study or time with family because of it.
- Gambling to escape stress, loneliness or low mood.
GamStop — the national self-exclusion scheme
GamStop is free and takes a few minutes. One registration blocks your access to every operator licensed by the UK Gambling Commission for a term you choose: six months, one year or five years. It cannot be reversed early, which is exactly the point.
Register directly at gamstop.co.uk. Every brand reviewed on this website is connected to the scheme, so a GamStop registration blocks Midnite and Betano alike.
Operator-level tools
Every UKGC-licensed operator must offer deposit limits, loss limits, session reminders, cooling-off periods and self-exclusion. A limit reduction takes effect immediately; an increase must wait through a cooling-off period before it applies.
Take five minutes to set these up before your first deposit. It is the single most effective thing you can do, and it takes less time than reading a bonus term.
Blocking software and bank controls
Blocking software such as Gamban, BetBlocker and GamBlock restricts gambling content at device level across your phone and computer. BetBlocker is free.
Most UK banks — including Monzo, Starling, Barclays, Lloyds, HSBC, NatWest and Santander — offer a gambling block in their app that declines gambling transactions on your card, usually with a cooling-off delay before it can be switched off. Combining a bank block, blocking software and GamStop is far more effective than any one of them alone.
Protecting under-18s
Gambling under 18 is a criminal offence in Great Britain. If you share a device, use family-filtering software such as Net Nanny or Qustodio, keep payment cards out of stored credentials, and never let a minor watch you gamble. Age verification is required by law before wagering at every licensed operator.
Supporting someone else
GamAnon supports the families and friends of people affected by gambling, and the National Gambling Helpline will speak to you about someone else's gambling. Approach the conversation without blame, keep the focus on specific behaviour rather than character, and encourage professional support rather than taking on the debt yourself.

Before anything else, stay in control
Gambling is entertainment with a price attached — never a way to make money, clear a debt or recover a loss. Set a deposit limit before your first deposit, and stake only what you would be content to lose entirely.
